Homemade Steak Sauce

May 06 By JJ

Family picture

We’ve spent the last 2 weeks celebrating Currey and it has been a blast!  While I believe all birthdays should be big celebrations, he turned 30 this year so lots of celebrations were necessary.  We got away just the 2 of us for a couple of days and have also enjoyed lots of celebratory dinners with friends.

Birthday Table

Our final birthday celebration was a small dinner at home. I’d be the first to admit that decorating is not my strong suit but I wanted to make sure this night is special.  I realize that this isn’t a design blog but I wanted to share the table we created with a very small budget.  I have a random collection of white dishes that we decided to use.  These dishes are a mismatched collection acquired from thrift stores and antique malls.  We bought a new tablecloth at Target and a set of 12 black napkins to match.  I tied the napkins with a 12-inch piece of burlap ribbon.  I got 3 rectangular vases at Goodwill for $1 each and I filled them with white flowers.  I used candles that I already had as well.  I was so pleased with the end result!

Napkins

The menu was simply steak and grilled chicken.  Our friends brought a salad and dessert was homemade ice cream and cookies. On a whim, I decided to make homemade steak sauce.  I remembered pinning a recipe from Simply Scratch for homemade steak sauce.  I wanted to have enough for a crowd so I decided to triple the recipe.  The end result was a tangy and acidic.  Our guests went on and on about how good it was.  Several of them stated they don’t typically even eat steak sauce but they devoured this.  It’s amazing!

Barbecue Sauce

Homemade Steak Sauce

3 Onions, chopped

5 cloves garlic, minced

3 Tbsp. Dijon mustard

3 c. ketchup

4 small lemons

1/2 c. Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp pepper

2 Tbsp soy sauce

3 Tbsp brown sugar

Combine all ingredients in a large stock pot and bring to a boil.  Let simmer until sauce has thickened, about 40 minutes.  Strain sauce through a large mesh sieve into a big bowl.

Serve warm or refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.
